How we travel and what equipment we use

06/10/2025

In case it wasn't entirely clear to everyone (wink wink), our favorite way to travel is by car. Specifically, a Subaru Crosstrek. It replaced the previous generation, which was still called the XV at the time. It's a great, safe, and comfortable car with a fantastic chassis and unbeatable Symmetrical AWD permanent four-wheel drive. It is one of the smaller Subaru models in terms of size, but since there are only two of us traveling, it is perfectly adequate for our needs.

This is not our first all-wheel-drive car. First, it was a Dacia Duster, which we also took on a few off-road trips, such as when we went for a drive on the Alpine gravel roads of Monte Jafferau in the Western Alps...

...or perhaps have some fun on the off-road tracks in Most and Milovice...

Duster has been through quite a lot with us. 😉

Then we bought our first Subaru, an XV, which we drove a lot and experienced a lot with, and it took us to some really nice places. First with our first roof tent, which was a shell type, and then with our current tent from Decathlon.

Well, it's been almost a year now that we've been driving a Subaru, except now it's its younger brother, the Crosstrek. We kept the same tent because it suits us perfectly.

When we bought this Quechua roof tent at Decathlon some time ago, my wife and I were thrilled with it. The assembly, handling, materials, and workmanship are all factors that make this tent the best in its price range. And perhaps not only in its price range...

Last season, we upgraded it with an awning/vestibule, and now it's perfect.

We all have slightly different requirements, preferences, tastes, and budgets, but I really like a lot of things from Decathlon. We bought almost all of our camping equipment there. Starting with sleeping bags, a table, chairs, dishes, a grill, and even a shower and shower enclosure. The latter was one of our new additions last year, along with the awning and new grill. We usually go to Bezkemp, where we choose places with as much privacy as possible, or as far away from people as possible, but even so, the shower enclosure makes you feel comfortable. It takes two seconds to set up, but as is often the case with these two-second pieces of equipment, it takes about 10 minutes for two people to put it back in its case. Especially when you're doing it for the first time...🤦🏻‍♂️😉

But otherwise, it's really great.

Another new addition was the Campingaz gas grill. Hey, it's really good. It has a great surface that nothing sticks to. Seriously, nothing. Not even eggs, which you just slap on there without a drop of fat and let them cook on their own while you take care of the rest of breakfast. Maybe I'm just stupid and don't know much yet, but the fact that you pour water into the grill was completely new to me. But it's great. The fat and juice drip into the water, so nothing sticks to the grill itself. It's just great...

You can also remove the grill surface from the grill and suddenly you have a stove. We don't need to carry anything else with us because there are only two of us, so we don't need more plates. Plus, it's light and compact, and the gas cartridge lasts a long time.

In short, for relatively little money, we got a lot of fun in the "dekáč" and now we have, so to speak, a complete set of travel equipment. Of course, over time, I'll think of something else to spend my wife's money on, but even so, we've got it pretty much covered.

Oh, and I almost forgot, it's also important to have a power source when traveling. For us, that's the EcoFlow RIVER 2.
